What you get
Features
A SohoPage blog is built on one idea: that a long piece of writing deserves a page as considered as the prose on it. This is what every writer here is given, and what every reader finds on arrival.
The page
Set for reading, not for scrolling past.
Typography with a point of view
Stories are set in Newsreader, a serif drawn for sustained reading, with Hanken Grotesk for the quieter details. Measure, leading and spacing are tuned so that a five-thousand-word essay feels as easy as a short note.
One calm column
No sidebars of widgets, no banners, no pop-ups. The text keeps a single comfortable line length, and images, quotations and tables are given room to breathe around it.
Contents for the long ones
Longer stories gain a table of contents drawn from their own headings, so a reader can see the shape of an argument before setting out, and find their place again later.
Every accent where it belongs
Vietnamese and other accented languages are fully supported, from stacked diacritics to the letter đ, in headlines as faithfully as in body text.
The blog
A room of your own, with your name on the door.
An address that is yours
Your blog lives at /your-handle/ on SohoPage, with every story gathered beneath it: a place you can point to, cite and come back to.
A profile that introduces you
A portrait, a short biography and, if you wish, a link to your own website, shown beside your work rather than tucked away on a settings page.
Categories and topics
Arrange your writing into categories of your own design, and tag stories with topics that connect them to related work across the site.
Cover images, or none at all
Give a story a cover photograph, or leave it out and let a typographic plate stand in. Images placed inside a post are hosted on the site with it.
Readers
Nothing stands between a reader and the first paragraph.
Free, with no account
Every story is open to read. There is no sign-up wall, no newsletter prompt and no counter ticking down to a paywall.
Responses worth reading
Readers can reply with only a name and a few words. Each response is reviewed by moderators before it appears, so the conversation beneath a piece stays as thoughtful as the piece.
Feeds, the old-fashioned way
Every writer has an RSS feed at /handle/feed.xml, and the whole site has one at /feed.xml. Readers follow you in the reader of their choice, on their own terms.
Under the hood
Light by design, and quiet about it.
Plain, quick pages
Every page is rendered on the server as plain HTML and CSS. It opens quickly on a slow connection and reads as well on a phone as on a wide desktop screen.
Nothing watching
No analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels and no cookies for readers. A visit to a SohoPage blog is simply a visit.
Ordinary links
Links in your stories are ordinary links. Cite your sources, point to your own website, send readers wherever the writing leads.
